What is Cologne?
While the term “cologne” is usually used when describing a men’s fragrance, cologne itself is not specifically a men’s or women’s product. Instead, it refers to an aromatic compound which is a less concentrated version of a stronger perfume. Where a perfume may be constructed with 15-40% concentration of aromatic compounds, a cologne typically offers 3–8%.
Cologne also refers to the location where the type of fragrance was initially created - Cologne, Germany. An Italian named Giovanni Maria Farina first developed cologne in 1709 in Germany, creating a fresh, citrus fragrance that would set the standard for future aromatic creations.
Common Cologne Components & Scents
Colognes typically offer three levels of scent notes - a top note, middle note, and a base note. The top note is the one that is immediately noticeable, making it the first impression of the fragrance. The middle note is a bit deeper than the top note, and offers a bit more complexity. The base note is the scent that lingers after the other layers wear off. Typically, it takes 30 minutes for base notes to become identifiable, so it might be best if you apply your fragrance about half an hour before any event or occasion you’re attending.
As for the specific fragrances found in cologne, look for popular and traditional aromas like floral scents. These can include the scent of a rose, a floral bouquet which is a combination of more than one flower, or a sweeter scent that combines aromas like vanilla, flowers, and woods. Speaking of woody scents, these aromatics are quite popular, and include various options like sandalwood or cedar. Other scents to consider include tars, tobaccos, honey, moss, and bergamot.
You can also find colognes that offer more modern scents like fresh cut grass, ocean scents, fresh fruits, and even desserts.
In general, these scents are procured from natural sources, but can also be synthetically sourced, too.
Choosing the Right Cologne Scent for You
The best way to test a scent to see how it works for you is to go into a store and use the sample tester provided to take the aroma out for a test drive! Wearing the sample to the office, out to dinner, etc. you’ll be able to experience how the scent will linger after a few hours and in different situations.
Then, if you enjoy the scent, you can go back to the store and buy the bottle. If not, repeat the process with other options to see which one works best for you!
