Bath Mats & Rugs

After you're fresh and clean, there's no better feeling than stepping out onto a soft, plush bath mat. When it's time to wash up, bathroom rugs create a grippy surface on the bottom to keep you safe and secure from slips as you exit the tub. In general, memory foam bath rugs promise a luxurious experience, while traditional cotton bath rugs offer a classic and cozy feel. Kohl's offers a great selection of bathroom rug sets to dry your feet and create an effortless, coordinated look in your bathroom.

Have you looked at your bath mat lately? The hygiene of your mat largely depends on how often it's used and how often it's washed. Whether you already own a bath mat or you're in the market for a new one, bathroom rugs that are frequently used should be washed weekly (or at least every 2-3 weeks). Not sure how to wash bath mats? We've got you covered.

How to Wash Bath Mats

Step 1: Shake the Bath Mats Outdoors

Many bath mats can be laundered as you would your towels and washcloths. However, it's still important to check the tags on your rugs first for washing instructions and care recommendations. Before washing your bath mats, take them outside and give them a good shake. You'll be shocked at the amount of dirt, dust, and hair that flies out. Keep shaking each rug until you don't notice anything else flying off. Then, wipe off the plastic or rubber backing with a dry microfiber cloth.

Step 2: Wash the Bath Mats

Washing Machine

Before placing the bath mats in the washing machine, double-check the manufacturer's recommendations for the ideal water temperature. Machine-washable bath mat materials typically include cotton rugs, polyester mats, and nylon bath mats. In some cases, heat is ideal for killing bacteria and mold, so a warm temperature can be selected for the aforementioned types of rugs.

A memory foam mat, on the other hand, should be washed at a cooler temperature to keep it intact. You can wash one to three mats at a time to balance the load and prevent them from being getting damaged.

Handwashing

Rugs that are made from delicate materials or are too big to fit your machine can be washed by hand. Additionally, handwashing can help extend the life of your rug by helping it maintain its materials. To wash by hand, begin by filling your bathtub or sink with warm water. Next, put on a pair of rubber gloves and add a few tablespoons of laundry detergent. Then, add the rugs to the mix and use a sponge or clean bristle brush to gently scrub it. Finally, rinse with cool water.

Step 3: Dry the Bath Mats

Once your rugs and bath mats are done washing, hang them outside to dry when possible. Not only can this help preserve their rubber backing and adhesives, but drying them in the sun helps sanitize them too. If you're unable to let them air dry, they can tumble dry on the lowest setting for approximately 20 minutes. Just be sure to immediately remove them from the dryer to avoid damaging the rubber bottoms of your mats.
