Socks are an important piece of clothing, even though most people don?t pay much attention to them. The sock you need depends upon your activity level and climate. Socks are being made out of a variety of materials. Below are the most common choices and their particularities:
Cotton
The most common sock fiber, cotton is absorbent and soaks sweat off the skin, however; it does not wick moisture away and wetness will not evaporate quickly unless blended with a synthetic. This inexpensive fiber is ideal for daily non-active use.
Wool
An ideal insulator, wool socks tend to be bulky and lofty. This easy-care fiber breathes easily but lacks wicking properties, though absorbent. Wool helps feet remain dry in most conditions.
Synthetics
Common synthetic sock fibers include but are not limited to polyester, nylon, acrylic and spandex. Several of these fibers are often combined or used in select areas of a sock for added stretch, durability, etc. These sport blends are best for managing moisture build-up and are usually compatible with the materials inside your shoes, making them ideal for running and other high-intensity activities. Often lightweight, synthetic socks retain shape and withstand the test of time better than those made with other materials.
