Energy-Efficient Curtains & Drapes

It’s always a smart idea to try to make your home as energy efficient as possible. While some ways of doing this can be expensive and time consuming, there is one way that is easy, effective, and won’t break the bank!

Buying and installing energy-efficient window treatments from Kohl’s is a simple and effective way to help you save money, all while keeping your home at a comfortable temperature level during the entire year. They retain heat during the winter and reject heat in the summer, resulting in lower cooling and heating bills. And the amount of heat to be allowed into your home is all based on your preference to keep the curtains open or closed.

Shop Kohl’s for all your home decor items, including window dressings, that are sure to bring out the best in your living space!

How Do Energy-Efficient Curtains & Drapes Work?

Energy-efficient drapes use a multi-layered construction to ensure your home is kept at the right temperature. The first layer, and the one that is seen by you and your family, is a decorative fabric layer. This layer can be made of a wide variety of materials, including cotton, polyester, linen, wool or silk.

The middle layer is typically made of foam, felt, thick cotton, flannel, or another thermally resistant material. This layer keeps the heat in your home, rather than letting it escape.

The third layer is the backing, and this layer serves as a lining to protect the inner layer from sunlight. Light-colored backings reflect light and heat, which reduces the heat that enters your home during summer. Backings may be made of cotton, reflective film, vinyl or other materials. Some insulating curtains have a fourth layer that could serve as a vapor barrier that protects the other layers of the curtains from condensation that forms on windows.

Using Your Energy-Efficient Windows

As mentioned above, energy-efficient window dressings work both to keep heat from escaping you home, as well as reflecting the sun’s heat away from your home. Let’s look a bit more specifically at how energy-efficient drapes and curtains work during both the warm and cold times of the year.

  • Warm Weather

For warm-weather use, select a treatment option with a light color solar backing. Light colors reflect sunlight, sending the heat from the sun away from your home. To ensure the heat stays away, keep the curtains closed prior to the hottest part of the day, as well as before any sunlight directly hits your window. Reflecting the heat away will keep your home cooler, and reduce the need for running the air conditioning. This will help you save money in the long run!

  • Cold Weather

Energy-efficient curtains can also work to keep heat inside your home in the winter months! To do this, open the energy-efficient curtains during the day when the window is receiving direct sunlight. Any use of natural sunlight during cold weather will lessen the need to run your home furnace. Close the curtains as soon as the sun has set to keep all the heat from escaping through the window. Allowing the heat in, then ensuring it doesn’t escape, keeps your home toasty and reduces the need to run the furnace to keep the temperature comfortable.

Installing Energy-Efficient Window Treatments

Proper installation can make a world of difference when it comes to getting the most out of your energy-efficient windows. The more air-tight they are, the better they impede the transfer of heat.

Energy-efficient curtains should be installed so that they can be as close to the window frame as possible. They are also most effective when they drop to the windowsill or floor. Installing a valance further reduces the infiltration or escape of air.

To make the curtains work even better for you, secure the curtain to the frame or adjacent walls with some type of adhesive material, magnetic tape or hooks. Overlap the curtains in the center to prevent warm air from escaping. Also, layering with more than one curtain or drape allows you to control how much light and air enters your living space.

Styling Your Energy-Efficient Curtains & Drapes

One may assume that energy-efficient curtains are designed only to be functional, and offer little in the way of style. However, our assortment of curtains come in a variety of styles, patterns, textures and colors that can easily coordinate with the rest of the decor in your home.

Shop Kohl’s for all your home essentials, including drapes, curtains, and other window treatments. Be sure to find other home must-haves, like furniture, decor, bedding, and more, and create a living space you’re sure to love!
