Potty Training Baby Gear Essentials

Potty training is an unavoidable milestone, but the key is to remain patient. As your baby grows into a toddler and beyond, you need the right baby gear to help you in your little one’s potty training adventure. Fortunately, Kohl’s has all of the potty training essentials needed to get the job done. Our potty seats, accessories, and step stools can help make this transition smoother and more successful.

At What Age Should a Child Be Potty Trained?

Many parents are unsure when it’s the right time to start toilet training or "potty training.” Generally speaking, parents should watch for signs of toilet training readiness between ages 18 and 24 months. Every toddler reaches this ever-important milestone at their own pace. Therefore, it’s important to remember not to push your child before they're ready and to be patient with them. Beyond age, you should look out for their physical, developmental, and behavioral milestones to know when it’s truly time to train your child.

Signs to Look Out for

  • You’re changing fewer diapers
  • Your little one is staying dry for at least 2 hours at a time or during nap time
  • Your child can follow simple instructions
  • Your child wants privacy when they fill their diaper
  • Your child shows interest in using the potty or wearing underwear

Potty Training Equipment

Proper toilet training doesn’t require a whole arsenal of new gear. All you really need is a good potty seat and a step stool. Place a potty chair in the bathroom or, initially, wherever your child is spending most of his or her time. A great first option is a Dreambaby potty seat with a removable bowl for quick and easy cleaning. Encourage your child to sit on the potty chair in clothes to start out. This potty seat features a built-in splash guard and non-slip rubber grips for your child's support and comfort.

As your child gets older, be sure to use simple, positive terms to talk about the toilet. If they’re not quite tall enough to reach it, then a step stool will give them a sense of independence by enabling them to reach areas that are too high. Many feature a contoured design to fit around the base of a toilet, but can also be used to reach the sink.

Once they’re ready to make the change from a potty seat to the toilet, opt for a toilet trainer. Its contoured shape helps your child feel safe and secure while on the big potty. From round to elongated toilet seats, this potty fits nearly all toilets.

Potty Training Tips

There isn’t one right way to learn how to use the toilet. How long potty training takes as a process will depend on your individual child and the method you choose. However, these tips and tricks can help make potty training your child just a little bit easier.

  • Get on a potty schedule - Have your child sit on the potty seat or toilet without a diaper for a few minutes at two-hour intervals.
  • Use rewards - Each time that your child uses the potty successfully, try rewarding them to help keep them motivated.
  • Create a potty training song - Musical encouragement can help them feel more relaxed and excited.
