When in need of more counter space
So you've got a decent sized kitchen but then very little counter space. You might feel this more intensely if you have a number of appliances in your kitchen. Cooking slowly becomes a chore, and then a nightmare as you lose you precious prep-space. All hope seems lost. If only there were a way to get your space back!

The difference between islands and carts
If it wasn't obvious, there's a big difference between a kitchen island and a kitchen cart. The island features a hardtop to help with food prep, and often features cabinet storage to help get some of your cooking appliances out of the way and easily accessible. They're designed to match different decors but they do trend towards a slightly more rustic look. Often they're made with quality materials and have a real heftiness to them. If you enjoy sturdy furniture then there's no reason not splurge.
The kitchen cart is a little different. They also feature a top, but it's more for holding than prepping. They also tend to feature undercarriage storage, some without doors. They're ultimately lighter and exclusively for storage. With that said, if you don't need more counter space, but you need more storage, this is the best option for you. Islands are designed for larger spaces, so carts a great option for smaller kitchens with less forgiving layouts.
Making the most of your cart
It's very likely that your current counter space is at an all-time premium. You can't have it too cluttered because you need space for a drying rack, your coffee maker, and maybe a few other basic appliances. But if you don't have any of the basic appliances you may need for more convenient cooking and living, it's because you lack the space for them. Adding a cart to your space can be a great way to either free up what space you have, or give you the opportunity to acquire some of the appliances you may need to fix your cooking flow.
If you're renting, there's a pretty high probability that you don't have a microwave. Well, having a cart can give you enough space to finally have one. Having a microwave can shorten many meals to mere minutes, or at least drain away some of the hassle. Thawing meat is far less time consuming. You can bake potatoes in minutes, rather than doing so in the oven. No more reheating leftovers in a skillet (or even not saving leftovers in the first place). No more stove top meals, if there are microwave counterparts. Adding a cart to your kitchen can open up a world of possibilities for your cooking. | French presses and electric kettles Your perception of coffee and tea could change forever with the right kitchen cart. Turn it into a coffee and tea station by adding a French press and an electric kettle. These items are integral to allow your coffee and certain loose leaf teas to steep properly. The french press draws out latent flavors that are often scalded away by typical coffee makers. You'll get more floral notes that are often lost. To make the most of your French press consider also having a coffee bean grinder, to get the perfect grounds. Your hot water boiler will give your water a more tempered boil, which you can stop sooner than if you were boiling on the stove top. Controlling water temperature is key for drawing out the complex flavors found in tea. Just like coffee conventional brewing of tea leaves tends to erase many of the flavors, so if you're working with loose leaf tea, consider getting a good water boiler. |
