Does Your Baby Need a Coat During the Wintertime?
Just as adults need coats during the wintertime, so do children. However, a winter coat alone won't keep a child warm. Be sure to dress your baby or toddler in thin layers of close-fitting clothing such as tights, leggings, or a long-sleeve bodysuit. Each layer will hold warm air next to their skin and keep it there once you add on pants and a shirt or sweater. Additional items like hats, mittens, and warm socks will help to keep the rest of their body warm without interfering with the snugness of their car seat.
Beware of Bulky Coats in Car Seats
We know that you want the best when it comes to your child. But one of the biggest errors parents make, particularly in cold weather, is one that they don’t even realize. Many parents put their child in the car seat wearing a big winter coat, puffy coat, or snowsuit. Although it’s important to bundle up children to help them brave the elements, a bulky coat and a car seat can be a dangerous combination.
Most winter coats are filled with bulky insulation that makes them warm. Unfortunately, that same insulation can create space between a child’s chest and the car-seat strap, which should fit snuggly when tightened. The car seat harness needs to stay close to the child's body at all times. That’s why it’s important to understand the art of layering. Options like fleece jackets and other midweight coats are nice and warm, yet fit snug to the body. If you prefer a puffy jacket, just be sure to compress all the puff when tightening the child’s harness straps, making it safe for the car seat.
How to Choose a Coat for Your Baby
When the cold and rainy season sets in, the first garment that you’ll reach for is a coat. These options are perfect for any occasion or event. Make sure you’re prepared with any one of the jackets in our collection.
