Things to Consider When Shopping for a Cooler

It is important to go into cooler shopping knowing exactly what you want to get out of the option you decide to go with. Where are you taking the cooler? How much food do you need to pack into it? How often will you use it?

Answering these questions will help guide you to the right cooler option, ensuring you get the item you need for your next trip!

  • Cooler Size

The first factor to consider when choosing a cooler is the size of it. And this doesn’t just refer to how big the cooler itself is - it also requires you to consider the storage volume of the cooler as well.

The storage size of a cooler essentially tells you how much space there is inside to store food and drinks. Be aware that some coolers may have both insulated and non-insulated storage space.

The cooler itself will take up some space, too, so know just how big it is when considering how and where you’ll need to store it when it’s not in use. Also, a larger cooler might hold plenty of items inside it, but it will also take up a lot of space when you want to pack it in your car for a road trip. Make sure you find that perfect cooler that balances both storage size inside of it, with the actual dimensions of the cooler around the outside.

  • Insulation

Coolers can be made from a wide range of materials - from rubber to plastic, metal to fabric. There are pros and cons to each, but the most important factor to consider is how well a cooler keeps things cold.

Plastic tends to be the most readily available options, and is one of the cheapest materials as well. It offers decent insulation, is waterproof, and is fairly lightweight.

In terms of insulation length, most coolers can keep ice frozen for at least a few hours. The top-of-the line coolers on the market can keep ice frozen for almost a week, but that kind of insulation will definitely cost you.

There are coolers in between those time frames, however, so there’s sure to be a cooler that keeps your ice frozen for the amount of time you need.

Other Cooler Tips & Tricks

So you’ve settled on that perfect cooler for your needs - great! Now, let’s get into the nitty gritty of packing and preparing a cooler for use!

There are a few things you can do to make your cooler work even better for you, before you even start packing it up. Bring the cooler inside if it’s stored out in the garage to help lower the temperature a bit. Clean the cooler thoroughly as well. To ensure your cooler is as ready as possible for your trip, pre-chill it by placing ice inside it 12 hours before use. Discard the ice/water before packing.

When packing, consider using ice blocks or larger reusable freezer packs. Ice cubes are OK to use as well, but will melt faster than the other options. Ice cubes do work really well for filling in gaps between cans, bottles, and other containers in the cooler, however. If you don’t have freezer packs, use plastic jugs or water bottles filled with frozen water. Place the ice blocks/freezer packs on the bottom of the cooler and fill with food and drink from the bottom to the top.

Ensure containers of food are sealed, and keep containers that may leak or allow water in close to the top to ensure freshness.

Consider mapping out where your food items are in the cooler. This will save you time when going into the cooler to grab an item, as you’ll know exactly where it is and can limit the time the lid is open, letting in warmer air.

For long trips, you can consider the use of dry ice, which will stay extremely cold for extended periods of time. But you must handle dry ice carefully, as it can cause freezer burns to your skin since it’s so cold. Wear cloth or leather gloves or oven mitts when handling.

Considering all these factors, you can now find that perfect cooler for your outdoor essential collection! Shop Kohl’s for other outdoor needs, including camping tools, tents, outdoor games, and more, and find all the things you need to get outside and explore!
