Types of Cocktail Glasses

• Highball Glass

These glasses are used mostly for their versatility, and are the style used for making traditional mixed drinks that feature just a couple ingredients - think your typical whiskey and cola. Drinks are typically made right in the highball glass, and served in the same vessel.

• Old Fashioned Glass

The shorter version of the highball glass (it is also not surprisingly called a lowball glass), the old fashioned glass is perfect for serving straight liquors neat or on the rocks. • Martini Glass

• Shakers

No home bar is complete without a shaker. There are a couple different kinds of shakers: the cobbler shaker and the Boston shaker. The cobbler shaker might be the most easily identifiable shaker, and is likely the one you think of when the term “cocktail shaker” comes to mind. It features a shaking tin, a lid, and a small removable cap with a built-in strainer.

A Boston shaker is probably what you’d see a professional bartender using at your favorite cocktail bar. This style of shaker is made up of two parts: a shaking tin and a mixing glass (or smaller tin) that fit together to form a seal.

• Measuring Tools

The most popular, and most handy, measuring tool out there for home bars is the jigger. A jigger is essentially two separate measuring cups welded together to form an hourglass shape. One of the cups is a smaller size, while the other is a bit larger in capacity. You can also use the old standby shot glass to measure amounts to put into drinks. A typical shot glass holds 1.5 ounces of liquid, but shot glasses can come in a wide range of sizes, as there’s no “official” standard for the measure of one shot.

• Bottle Openers

It might go without saying, but every bar needs several types of bottle openers, or one bottle opener that offers multiple opening functions! Traditional bottle openers easily pop the cap off of pretty much any bottle type with ease. To open wine bottles, you’ll need a corkscrew. Some bottle openers and corkscrews come complete with the ability to open both types of bottles, so finding an all-in-one opener makes things even easier!
